MMG Limited (MMG) refers to our previous update regarding Las Bambas released on 28 April 2022.
MMG advises that this morning community members invaded the Las Bambas property, the protestors actions were violent and have damaged equipment at site. The National Police of Peru and private security from Las Bambas attempted to protect our site and people. These defensive actions were taken in accordance with MMG’s ongoing commitment to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR). MMG remains in control of critical infrastructure on site.
MMG took no possessory defence action to remove any protestors from our site and projects areas.
Regrettably, we are aware that a number of injuries was sustained by police, security personnel and community members. All injured persons are receiving medical treatment and the Company expresses its sympathy for those injured.
The 30-day State of Emergency in the Challhuahuacho and Coyllurqi districts has commenced operation, in order to reinstate public order.
MMG continues to seek constructive dialogue with the communities, as well as Government representatives, to arrange for the protestors to safely leave the mine. The safety, security and operational threats from the site invasion continue.
There are over 900 MMG employees and contractors currently on site and our primary focus remains on ensuring the health, safety and security of our employees, contractors as well as the community members involved. Safely resolving the current site invasion and restoring peaceful dialogue remain the company’s primary aim.
Due to the ongoing safety concerns operations remain suspended.
