MMG Rosebery won the Tasmanian Mine Rescue Competition for the second year running at the annual event held over the weekend.
The event was also hosted this year at MMG Rosebery on Tasmania’s West Coast and saw teams from six mines come together compete in the event.
Teams demonstrated a professional and disciplined approach to complete the six events said MMG Rosebery Safety, Health, Environment & Community Manager Kevin Morrison.
“Mine rescue competitions are a fantastic opportunity for emergency rescue teams to hone these important skills and I’d like to thank all the teams and mines that participated in the event this year.”
“Congratulations to the MMG Rosebery team for finishing first place in the overall competition and we also congratulate Beaconsfield and Grange Resources for their equal second place,” said Mr Morrison.
In addition MMG Rosebery took out the Overall Safety Winner award for the third year in a row which is presented to the team that demonstrates the safest practice throughout all of the events.
“This is an achievement that MMG Rosebery is very proud of,” said Mr Morrison.
MMG Rosebery’s Mine Rescue Team comprises Terry Pedder (Captain), Elmar Van Breda, Josh Berryman (Vice-Captain), Marcus Cook, Graham Cowan, Craig Lawler, Matt McMullen.
“Congratulations also goes to MMG Rosebery Team Captain Terry Pedder for his Best Team Captain award. Terry has been an active member of the team here at Rosebery for many years and has captained the team to win events in both Tasmanian and Victorian mine rescue competitions through that time,” said Mr Morrison.
Copper Mines Tasmania (CMT – Mt Lyell), Metals X (Renison), Grange Resources (Savage River), Beaconsfield Gold, Fosterville (Bendigo VIC) and MMG Rosebery competed in six scenarios comprising of underground search and rescue, fire fighting, rope rescue, first aid, theory and skills event.
The event was the highlight of a full weekend of activities on the West Coast supported by MMG including the Tullah Challenge triathlon event and Zeehan Gem and Mineral Fair.
Tasmanian Legislative Council Member the Hon Ruth Forrest MLC and West Coast Council Mayor Darryl Gerrity attended the mine rescue competition along with members of the local community.
The Tasmanian Mine Rescue Competition is a non profit event organised under the auspices of the Tasmanian Mine Rescue Steering Committee (an independent organisation consisting of the members of the Tasmanian Mine Rescue Mutual Aid Agreement). The event could not held without the support of many sponsors and volunteers most of whom also provide their own time to judge the event. The success of this event is a credit to all involved.
