MMG is proud to be part of The Whole Story, a publication by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) detailing the full contribution the mining sector makes to communities across Australia.
In addition to showing the breadth of the industry’s contribution, The Whole Story highlights the importance placed on continuing to improve our economic, social and environmental performance.
MMG’s own contribution is also discussed, with case studies regarding Indigenous employment and training initiatives at Century mine and our Northern Territory exploration program.
The Whole Story: MMG Case Study – Indigenous business leading upskilling
An upskill program is preparing 20 local Indigenous people for employment associated with exploration activity near MMG’s operation at Borroloola in the Northern Territory.
Borroloola-based Indigenous business, Pandanus Development Group (PDG),recognised that exploration activity in the area would create a need for qualified field assistants.
The six week training program designed by PDG with industry and government input began with an induction hosted by MMG Ltd at their regional camp.
‘I am impressed by the level of support and commitment given by MMG Ltd not only in regards to employment opportunities but also for access to pre-employment medicals and the on-site induction to kick start participant training,’ says PDG Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Mulholland.
MMG Ltd and TECK Australia have committed to employing the participants as field assistants during their 2015 field exploration programs – providing work opportunities as well as important experience.
PDG and its partner ECB Training will provide ongoing mentoring to help participants transition into employment.
