Local and national recognition for social development initiatives by MMG Kinsevere

MMG Kinsevere’s social development performance was recognised last week, with the mine taking out the award for Best Social Impact at the Katanga Business Awards.

Now in their sixth year, the Katanga Business Awards recognise excellence across a range of business areas, including social development, among companies operating in the province.

Kinsevere’s extensive sustainable development program aims to contribute to long-term and measurable improvements to food security, education, health and wellbeing and business and infrastructure development in areas surrounding the mine.

Separately, MMG is one of 12 companies nominated in the Best Performer Social Investment category at the inaugural DRC Mining Industry Awards.

Kinsevere’s Manager of Social Development, Michel Santos was also nominated in the Lifetime Achievement category at the awards.

Kinsevere General Manager Miles Naude said that MMG’s recognition at both a local and national level was a credit to the operation’s committed and passionate social development team.

“Our team works incredibly hard to build strong, long-term partnerships with nearby communities, local authorities and development organisations with the aim of addressing important community issues, such as agricultural development, child health and access to clean water.

“Our team is committed to contributing to real improvements to the lives of residents in villages surrounding Kinsevere and beyond. This award is a credit to their efforts and impact.”

Mr Naude also congratulated Mr Santos on his nomination at the DRC Mining Industry Awards.

“Michel is important member of the Kinsevere management team, and has led the operation’s sustainable development program since 2009.

“While this is a credit to our team, I am incredibly pleased to see Michel’s personal dedication and determination acknowledged at a national level.”

The DRC Mining Awards will be held on 22 October 2014 as part of the iPAD DRC Mining & Infrastructure Indaba in Kinshasa, an industry-wide conference attracting participants from across the country.

In addition to initiatives to improve food security, child health and clean water access, MMG invests in a broad range of projects to improve educational outcomes, enhance the local transport network and support the development of self-sustaining small businesses.

MMG’s recognition at the Katanga Business Awards and Mining Industry Awards follows the company’s recent inclusion in two key indexes identifying sustainability leaders across Asia.

MMG acquired the world-class Kinsevere copper mine, located in Katanga Province, in 2012.

MMG received the award for Best Social Impact at the Katanga Business Awards on 4 October.
