EPA approves Bobadil embankment raises

MMG’s Rosebery Mine has received regulatory approval to progress with an expansion of an existing tailings storage facility (TSF).

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Board has given the green light for a program of works to raise the embankment wall at the Bobadil TSF. The project now requires final approval from West Coast Council.

Rosebery Mine General Manager Steve Scott said the Bobadil Stage 11 and 12 raises will provide more than 2 years of interim additional tailings capacity.
“The Stage 11 and 12 embankment raises at the Bobadil TSF and a capacity increase at 2/5 Dam has the potential to extend the life of our existing tailings facilities through to 2030, subject to permitting approvals,” Mr Scott said.

“The Stage 11 embankment raise at Bobadil is expected to start early next year and take up to 9 months before becoming operational.

“Rosebery Mine has a strong future, with its largest ever exploration drilling program delivering positive results and the overall significant contribution made to the broader Tasmanian economy.”

Long-term, MMG Rosebery’s key focus is on developing a tailings storage solution to support operations well beyond 100 years.

MMG Rosebery pays more than $1.1 million annually in rates to the West Coast Council and around $70 million in employee salaries and benefits. Over the last 5 years, we have also contributed in excess of $100 million in royalty payments to the Tasmanian Government and approximately $2.6 million to the local community.
