Mine Closure Planning

At MMG, we are committed to minimising the environmental legacy impacts post-closure of our operational activities. Our approach involves adopting a life-of-asset perspective for closure planning, which includes technical assessments, forecasting, and consultations with relevant stakeholders. The level of detail in our closure plans varies based on the asset’s closure timeframe and decommissioning requirements and matures as the end of final production approaches. We aim to have a Feasibility Level Closure developed two years prior to closure.

In addition to environmental considerations, we actively manage the impacts of mine closure on employees, host communities, and economic development. Our workforce transition strategies and social development programs, implemented during operations, aim to contribute to longer-term economic development that is not solely reliant on mining and can be sustained post-closure.

When we plan to relinquish operations, our goal is to leave a positive legacy that balances environmental protection, social well-being, future land uses, and financial performance. Whenever possible, we aim to maintain value for the host community.
