MMG Rosebery – Melba train line derailment

As advised by TasRail, Train 378, travelling from Rosebery mine to Burnie, was derailed on the Melba Line at approximately 10 pm last night after hitting debris on the track caused by a minor landslide. The ore train was fully loaded with zinc concentrate at the time however no product loss, damage or injuries have been reported.

One locomotive was derailed from the track but in an upright position close to the track with no fuel spillage.

TasRail is managing the incident with recovery teams currently on site to re-rail the locomotive and repair the embankment slip.  MMG will continue to support TasRail as they work to return the line to operational service.

TasRail will undertake a full investigation into the derailment and additional preventative measures will be implemented as required to prevent a recurrence.

The Melba Line will be closed until derailment recovery is completed and the track repaired.

MMG will discuss potential impacts to production or supply directly with its customers however does not believe the line will be closed for an extended period.
