Rosebery Mine Rescue Team continues its success

MMG Rosebery has placed third in the 18th Victorian Mine Rescue Competition at the annual event held last weekend at a number of venues in the Central Victorian gold province of Bendigo. In addition the team had wins and places in multiple events. This builds on the Rosebery team’s success at last year’s Victorian event and first place in the 2010 Tasmanian Mines Rescue Competition.

A total of eight teams (three from Victoria, three from New South Wales and one each from Western Australia and Tasmania) competed across an array of disciplines. Scheduling opportunities allowed for teams to view others performances for the purpose of learning and continuous improvement.

MMG Rosebery General Manager John Lamb said “Everyone is a winner in competitions such as these. The commitment and professionalism of all who participated is a wonderful demonstration of the industry’s focus on safety and health in the mining industry”.

“All of the participants are, or have the potential to be, leaders in seeking a strong safety culture, and identifying the changes needed to further improve the industry’s safety performance,” Mr Lamb went on to say.

“Congratulations to the MMG Rosebery team for finishing third place in the overall competition and we also congratulate Stawell Gold and Cadia Valley operations for their first and second placings,” said Mr Lamb

“This is an achievement that MMG Rosebery is very proud of,” said Mr Lamb
MMG Rosebery’s Mine Rescue Team was comprises Elmar Van Breda (Captain), Graham Cowan (Vice Captain), Marcus Cook, Shane Youd, Craig Lawler, Matt McMullen, and Robert Post.

“Congratulations also goes to MMG Rosebery Team Captain Elmar Van Breda for his Best Team Captain award. Elmer has been an active member of the team here at Rosebery for many years.

North Parkes Mines, Bendigo Mining (Oscar1), Cobar Combined Mines Rescue (Cobar), Cadia Valley Operations, Fosterville Gold Mine, Stawell Gold Mines, Savannah Nickel Mines and MMG Rosebery competed in seven scenarios comprising underground search and rescue, fire fighting, rope rescue, first aid, theory and skills events.
