Australia’s largest zinc mine MMG Century was recognised as Hard Rock Mine of the Year at the 8th annual Australian Mining Prospect Awards last night.
Century beat out some of the industry’s most well-regarded operations, including Xstrata Zinc’s Mount Isa Mines and OM’s Bootu Creek Mine, to take out the prestigious award.
Century General Manager Karl Spaleck said that the award was recognition of the work the operation had undertaken in recent years to become a safer, stronger and more reliable operation.
“The judges cited our significant safety improvements, commitment to the sustainable development of local communities and strong 2010 production when honouring Century with this award.
“We’ve seen marked improvements in our safety performance over the past two years, have one of the highest levels of local Indigenous employment in the industry and delivered on our 2010 production
guidance despite a difficult wet season.”
Mr Spaleck said that the award was a credit to the focus and dedication of the mine’s almost 1000 strong workforce and ongoing support of its suppliers, communities and other stakeholders.
“Our recognition as Hard Rock Mine of the Year is due to the hard work and commitment of our people,
who continue to deliver results day after day.
“The ongoing support of our suppliers, local communities and other stakeholders is also a key factor in our
successes.”
Looking to the future, Mr Spaleck said the focus would be further improving the operation’s safety performance, providing meaningful employment and training opportunities for people from local communities and delivering strong production.
“We plan to build upon our safety and health, community, production and environment achievements over coming years.”
Century was also a finalist in the Australian Mine of the Year and Innovative Mining Solution (for its Fluid Injection Protection Sleeve) categories at the awards.
Located in remote north-west Queensland, Century is owned by MMG. MMG is a member of Minmetals Resources Limited (MMR), which is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
