Power solutions discussed at Katanga Energy Day

Working together to ensure sustainable and secure energy supply was the focus of Thursday’s Katanga Energy Day in Lubumbashi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Organised by MMG Limited (MMG) under the patronage of the Katanga Government and Chamber of Mines, the Katanga Energy Day brought together more than 100 representatives from government authorities, mining companies and energy suppliers.

The conference was opened by His Excellency Mr Moise Katumbi, the Governor of Katanga.

Mr Louis Kahindo, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Hydraulic Resources and Electricity, delivered the opening address with Mr Claude Polet, President of the Chamber of Mines, providing an introduction to the event.

MMG Executive General Manager Business Development Mike Nossal said that the conference had enabled participants to gain a broader understanding of the scope of various energy generation projects in development across the Province.

“The scale of energy generation projects currently underway in Katanga is significant.

“Thursday’s conference was an important next step in ongoing dialogue and engagement about how government, industry and business can maximise and complement energy generation projects to ensure sustainable, secure and cost-effective grid-sourced electricity supply,” Mr Nossal said.

Informing discussion were updates from Copperbelt Energy Corporation, Congo Energy, Unicompex Congo, Katanga Energy and joint venture partners Evagor, HPC and Gecamines as to the progress of their respective advanced stage energy generation projects.

SNEL and Tiger Resources also outlined their own energy initiatives at the conference.

The conference concluded with constructive discussions among participant energy suppliers, mining companies and government authorities about potential future partnerships.

Mr Nossal said he expects discussions to continue between parties.

“The initial response from Thursday’s presentations and dialogue has been overwhelming positive and, MMG hopes that this supports further progress towards a long-term solution to energy security in the region.

“We thank His Excellency Mr Moise Katumbi, the Governor of Katanga, Ministry of Hydraulic Resources and Electricity and Chamber of Mines for their patronage and ongoing support.”
