On 25 May 2015, MMG LXML Sepon (LXML) donated an ambulance and two new incubators to Savannakhet Hospital. The incubators will help support mothers and children admitted with premature births and other complications. The ambulance will enhance Savannakhet’s capacity to respond to emergencies. LXML donated other equipment to Savannakhet Hospital in 2014, including anaesthesia apparatus, an electrocardiograph, compressed gas regulators, and other essential items.
“I am very proud to support Savannakhet Hospital, particularly as this assistance directly benefits women and children. In line with our values, MMG is strongly committed to protecting the health, safety and well-being of our employees and ensuring communities receive a sustainable benefit from our activities. Most employees from Sepon mine live in Savannakhet, and this support demonstrates our continued commitment to safety and the delivery of health services” said Mr Suresh Vadnagra, General Manager, MMG LXML Sepon.
“We are extremely grateful for this support. This equipment will help save lives by enhancing our capacity to support children born prematurely. The ambulance will assist in responding to emergencies and building our capacity as a regional hospital,” said Dr Bounmay Toulabouth, Acting Director of Savannakhet Hospital.
In a unique partnership with the Lao Ministry of Health and UNICEF dedicated to saving children’s lives, LXML has also contributed US$1.4 million to child and maternal nutrition over three years through its ‘1000 Day’ program in Savannakhet, Saravan, and Attapeu provinces. “The legacy of MMG’s alliance with the Lao Ministry of Health and UNICEF will see a generation of children breaking the cycle of poverty and inequality through access to good nutrition, health care, and education,” said UNICEF Representative, Ms Hongwei Gao, who was present to witness the handover ceremony at Savannakhet Hospital.
LXML has also provided extensive support to Vilabouly District Hospital including building a new ward, water supply, an ambulance, and other medical equipment. LXLM sponsors the annual Lao Paediatrics’ Conference through Health Frontiers in Vientiane, and has supported maternal and child health care projects in Lao PDR through the Lao Women’s Union and Burnett Institute since the mine commenced operations in 2003.

The donation was witnessed by Dr Souphan Keomixay, Governor of Savannakhet, UNICEF Representative to the Lao PDR, Ms Hongwei Gao, and MMG Executive General Manager, Mr Troy Hey.
