Update on conflict near Las Bambas project

MMG Limited today advises that protest activity continues in the Apurimac region near the Las Bambas Project.

The protests, led by representatives from outlying communities, concern aspects of the approved Environmental Impact Assessment as well as a number of political and social issues relevant to the broader region.

On Monday 28 September (Peru time), protest activity escalated and police involvement increased. A number of protestors and police officers suffered injuries, and tragically, it has been reported that there have been a number of fatalities.

On Tuesday 29 September (Peru time), the President of Peru announced the suspension of Constitutional Rights in the region surrounding Las Bambas and sent additional army and police forces to the site to restore order.

While tensions remain high, the situation has currently eased.

In response to the protests, MMG Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Michelmore said:

“Unfortunately, the protest activities have continued today. We are greatly concerned regarding the four fatalities and over 16 people seriously injured. Our sympathies are with the families and loved ones of those deceased and injured.

“Our focus remains on ensuring the safety of the people located at the site and the local community, as well securing the site itself. As a result, late stage commissioning activities are now suspended.

“Clearly our preference is for those organising these protests to stop the violence, respect the orders of the military and police and to speak with us.

“The Las Bambas team has maintained positive dialogue with the Cotabambas and Grau communities of Apurimac over close to ten years of project development.

“We have, and will continue, to provide significant social benefits, while protecting the environment and heritage of this region of Peru.

“Las Bambas is a project that provides great benefits to many – from local communities to the people of Peru.

“We are supporting the local authorities who are acting to restore peace to the region. We are committed to delivering the promise of Las Bambas with the support of our surrounding communities and the people of Peru,” he said.

The management team at Las Bambas is continuing to monitor the situation and engage with key stakeholders, community leaders and government authorities.
