Nine community organisations will share in $24,000 of funding for initiatives that encourage community participation and inclusion across Tasmania’s West and North-West Coasts.
The funding is through Round 1 of MMG Rosebery mine’s 2016 sponsorship program, which provides community grants to initiatives that support active lifestyles, arts and culture, health and education in the township of Rosebery and surrounding areas. This is in addition to Rosebery mine’s major partnerships.
Recipient organisations include Unconformity, the Bright Ideas Program, the Rosebery RSL Women’s Auxiliary, Granville Harbour Community Coast Care Inc., the Dundas Cricket Club and Tas Health’s Strength to Strength Program.
Acting Rosebery Operations Manager George Rauntenbach said while it is a difficult time for the mining industry, he was pleased MMG could continue to support a diverse range of initiatives.
“We’re pleased to support a variety of initiatives including the Bright Ideas Program’s science event for students, the Rosebery RSL Women’s Auxiliary’s 65th anniversary celebrations and the Granville Harbour Community Coast Care’s environmental management activities.
“At the same time, we’ve also been able to provide funding to enable a number of organisations, such as Tas Health’s Strength to Strength program and Tullah Tiny Tots, to purchase new equipment.”
MMG has also provided $11,000 towards Unconformity, an arts and cultural event to be held in Queenstown in October 2016. The festival is expected to draw thousands of visitors to the West Coast.
2016 is the first year Rosebery’s mine sponsorships have been delivered in grant-style rounds. Applications for the second round of sponsorship will open in August 2016.
MMG’s major partnership and sponsorship programs in the area include its school nutrition initiative with three Rosebery schools, the Burnie Arts & Function Centre’s arts UNEARTHED community program, the 2016 Rosebery Festival and support for the Rosebery Community Health Centre.
MMG’s Rosebery mine marked 80 years of continuous operations in February 2016. The mine is located in the township of Rosebery on Tasmania’s West Coast.
