MMG Rosebery welcomes today’s Federal Court decision, which will allow the assessment of its proposed Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) at South Marionoak to continue.
The Bob Brown Foundation (BBF) has been attempting to halt activity that is required for the Commonwealth Government to assess the project under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act.)
Preliminary works include flora and fauna surveys and geotechnical investigations to determine the feasibility of constructing a TSF at the site.
General Manager, Steve Scott, said the activity was being conducted in strict accordance with conditions set by the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment (DAWE).
“Today’s decision will simply allow the assessment process to continue,” Mr Scott said.
“It confirms that MMG has, at all times, acted legally under the strict terms and conditions set by the Federal Government.
“We are taking specific and conservative steps to avoid impacts on masked owl habitat, including applying an exclusion zone around any potential habitat trees.
“It is important to remember there is still a rigorous process to be followed before any facility can be built, including many opportunities for the public to have its say.
“It is disappointing that the BBF continues to try to stop this project from even being assessed.
“The future of the Rosebery Mine is at stake if we can’t find somewhere to safely and securely store residue from the mining process.
“We are committed to finding the most balanced solution to secure the jobs of our 500 employees and contractors.”
